Feature Friday - Rainbow Lollies

My featured artist for the week is a fellow creator whom I met through DUST and I have also had the lovely opportunity to meet her in real life too!  So let me introduce Cassie of Rainbow Lollies!

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello lovely people. Firstly thank you to Deb of Two Cheeky Monkeys for featuring me as one of her Friday Featured sellers. Since you are here that means you are somewhat curious as to who I am. I am Cassie and I am a craftaholic. Ok maybe not that bad but I certainly have a very busy life. On days when I am not working as a Payroll Administrator (my day job), I am looking after my active toddler and making sure that there is always dinner on the table for hubby. Oh did I mention that I also run my little handmade business online called Rainbow Lollies? My hobby is crafting (if you have not guessed it by now) and also reading (children books are my favourite). I think that chocolate should be zero calories and yet still yummy. A day should have more than 24 hours so I have time do all things I have to do. We can still function like normal human beings despite having very little sleep.

Dr Who cufflinks!!!

Describe yourself in five words.
Shy, busy, sweet, dreamer, easily excitable (ok that was a phrase - sorry exceeded my 5 word limit!)

When and how did you first start crafting/creating?
My earliest crafting memory was when I started making board games from pieces of plain cardboard because my brother and I got bored with the store bought ones. I think I was around 9 or 10 years old. I also made a scrapbook filled with my drawings of animals and stories to go with it.

What do you create and what are your favourite materials with which to work?
I love trying out all kinds of craft. My creative space is like a natural disaster. Forever messy and filled to the brim with all kinds of projects. My Rainbow Lollies label carries a range of cufflinks, earrings as well as fun accessories like brooches and key rings. I must say my favourite material will always be Japanese fabric simply because I love anything cute (and the Japanese are well known for that!)

Christmas button magnets

When and how did you start selling online?
I started selling online a little over a year ago. I remembered thinking that I really want to be able to work from home and spend more time with my son. Of course I don't want just any work. I want to do something that I am passionate about, which is to be able to sell something that I make myself. I did some Googling and stumbled upon Etsy. Googled some more and then found Madeit. Both sites I fell in love with and decided to set up online stores to try my luck.

Describe your store in five words.
Fun, colourful, cute, happy, quirky.

Who or what are the influences behind your creations?
I would say children because the world always look different when you see it through their eyes. Also the handmade community. Everyone is talented in their own way and I am constantly amazed and inspired by the new creations that pop up daily.

Feature Friday - Saponify

I know it's been a while since I've had a feature Friday post, so I am pleased to introduce Sarah of the wittily named Saponify.  Those who know me will know that I love body products, especially soaps, and Sarah has some amazing products in her store!!!

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hi! My name is Sarah McManus, and I'm the owner, founder and maker at Saponify - luxury handmade. I moved to Sydney from New Zealand 6 years ago, and live in the sunny Inner West. I work from home, full time on my business.

Describe yourself in five words.
Creative, generous, loyal, playful, loving.

Rose, geranium, lavender and may chang soap

When and how did you first start crafting/creating?
I'd say my love of creating started when I was very young - watching both of my parents making amazing things seemingly constantly. Mum is a wonderful cook, and was always baking and making preserves when we were little, and Dad is very clever at building things from scratch. One of my earliest memories is 'helping' him build a jetty through the mangroves at the back of our house.
I started crafting in my early twenties, first knitting a scarf, and then progressing from there. Now I have a hand made business, so I guess you could say that things have come full circle. I still love to stitch, knit and create, but for now my focus is on Saponify, and I don't have a lot of spare time to make all the other bits and pieces that I'd like!

What do you create and what are your favourite materials with which to work?
I make beautiful, skin-loving Cold Process Soaps, Body Butters, Shea Butter Sugar Scrubs, Lip Balms and more!  One thing I couldn't live without is Fair Trade Organic Shea Butter. It is an excellent natural emollient (moisturiser), and is incredibly soothing to dry and chapped skin. I use it in generous amounts all of my soaps, and in almost every other product that I make.  I LOVE working with it!

Rosemary and mandarin hand and body butter

When and how did you start selling online?
I've been selling online for about 18 months now, through my website http://www.saponify.com.au/

Describe your store in 5 words.
Botanical, nourish, scent, colour, yum.

Who or what are the influences behind your creations?
I have a background in food, so that influences a lot of what I do, and how I come up with ideas for new products. Nature is also a big influence for me, the scent of flowers, the texture of ground nuts and seeds, the colours you can create by infusing herbs. I strive to create the most skin-loving products that I can, so everything in my range has been designed to make the most of what nature has on offer, and turn it into something that's effective, nourishing, and beautiful.

Spearmint and eucalyptus soap

Feature Friday - New Earth Soaps

This week's featured artist is another fellow Australian artisan and DUST member and I can personally attest to the beauty of her products.  Let me introduce Karen of New Earth Soaps.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Where do you live?
I currently live in Bunbury, Western Australia. It's a port city with lots of busy, hard working people. My artistic side is my escape from that world. I feel I don't fit in. I know I don't belong. But I have a future coming soon, in the most beautiful town on the south coast called Denmark. It's an artists feast. I can't wait for the first day of the rest of my life.
I do have a dayjob. I work in a little health shop with the most amazing people. My boss and co-worker are both Naturopaths and I learn from them something new everyday. I can use my knowledge of healthy skincare and the dangers of many toxic commercial ingredients to help customers make more informed decisions. I feel I am doing a little bit of good each day.

Describe yourself in five words.
Relentless
Dreamer
Tree-hugger
Intuitive
Respectful

When and how did you first start crafting/creating?
I sewed a lot when I was a kid. We lived in this big old house that had a few out-buildings. One used to be for the generator and the other for storing the coal. We had one converted to a sewing room. It was packed full of stuff and I used to make my own toys and dolls outfits from scraps. I'd watch an old black and white movie, then go and create a dolls costume modelled on what the leading lady wore.
I once upon a time could draw too. That ability seems to be MIA right now but I plan for it to return someday soon.

What do you create and what are your favourite materials with which to work?
I create handmade soaps and skincare items such as lip balms, creams and scrubs and I am just developing some new oil based perfumes right now. I am really enjoying that, putting my aromatherapy knowledge to use in blending my very own fragrances. It's a slow process, getting them just right, but I am loving it.
My favourite materials, well, thats a tough question. I love so many, but right now, I am enjoying using some new essential oils I have just introduced to my collection; sweet marjoram, clary sage, rosalina, rosewood and clementine. I love the healing properties of jojoba oil and rosehip oil too.

When and how did you start selling online?
It's been a little over 2 years ago I found etsy. It can be fun, especially since I became a part of the DUST team (www.dustteam.com.au) but I am frustrated at times that I can't give it my full and undivided attention. I need to work my day job right now, but when I move south, the story will be quite different.
Right now, my store, well my whole business really is having a bit of a transformation. A good friend is designing me a fresh new logo, something that represents new life. The overall look will be earthier, more natural. It's putting some things on hold till it's done, but it will be worth the wait. I just know it.

Describe your store in five words
Earthy and natural with much growing to be done. (You'll see lots of new things over winter. Watch this space!)

Who or what are the influences behind your creations?
I haven't really been influenced by anyone in particular recently, but in my early years of choosing a life devoid of chemicals and unnecessary additives, the great Anita Roddick of the original Body Shop was an inspiration, both in business and her pursuit of all natural and fair trade ingredients for her products.
I have always believed that a product doesn't need to be snow white or a pretty perfect pink to be beautiful and function well. It just needs to be of great quality and of a sympathetic blend to address the situation or problem. My recipes start off as a tiny idea, then I will research ingredients, looking for the best ones to use, then formulate, experiment and test, over and over till it's just right. And I know when it's just right, it just is.

Do you ever get "creator's block"?  And how do you get past it, if you do?
Creators block can be common, especially if you work hard at a day job too, have a lot going on in your life and sometimes your all important creative outlet which doubles as all important therapy gets left until last. I find that when I have some of that precious time and space, firstly you must look after yourself. Often I want to dive in to my soapy lab and get on with it, but I am better off taking time out and getting myself off to yoga or an afternoon exploring a beautiful beach or forest. It may feel a touch guilty at first, but creativity flows so much more after you spend some quality time in your happy place.

Feature Friday and Giveaway - Zinnia Pea

My featured artist this week is a fellow Aussie who creates pieces which are a little different but very funky.  Please welcome Christabel of Zinnia Pea!

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello! I'm Christabel, the full time designer behind Zinnia Pea and I live and work in the beautiful Adelaide Hills. My house is a little converted art studio so it works very well for both living and designing. It has a tiny kitchen, a big overgrown garden and way too many books. I love it!

Describe yourself in five words.
A bookworm, nerdy, shy, creative and a history buff. That's not really in keeping with the 5 words thing so I guess you could add in rule-breaker.

Bronte Sisters Teacup Set

When and how did you first start crafting/creating?
Well my mum tells me I was so "creative" when I was little that I had to wear a plastic raincoat and rubber boots whilst painting on the back verandah so I think you could safely say from an early age!

What do you create and what are your favourite materials with which to work?
I use porcelain inks to put quotes and little designs onto all kinds of china pieces, including teapots, teacups and coffee mugs. I love finding old ceramics in markets and op shops and deciding which quote fits. The upcycled pieces are definitely my favourites.

When and how did you start selling online?
I opened Zinnia Pea mid way through last year after inking a set of plain white plates and cups for myself. So many friends commented on them and asked for their own so I decided to open up shop and see how it went! I'm so pleased I did because it has been a wonderful adventure so far.

Pride and Prejudice Tea Pot

Describe your store in five words.
Quirky china with a literary difference. (Ok, that is more than 5 words again.. I'm definitely a rule breaker!) [Edit: You crack me up Christabel!!!]

Who or what are the influences behind your creations?
There are so many different influences behind my designs. Obviously Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters and the other amazing authors whose work I ink. But also, my Grandma for her love of tea and interesting china and my Mum, simply because of her tea addiction. The smell of freshly brewed black tea always reminds me of her, in her blue dressing gown reading the paper at an insanely early hour.

Alice in Wonderland Coffee Cup

Do you ever get "creator's block"?  And how do you get past it, if you do?
I read. Since starting Zinnia Pea I can't read a classic book without grabbing my notebook and noting down quotes I want to ink!

Where can we find you online?
Shop Etsy (including international post): http://www.etsy.com/shop/zinniapea

Special: Christabel is offering a 10% discount to Two Cheeky Monkeys readers.  Please mention that you are a blog reader at check out to receive your discount.

Feature Friday - Inspired Wish

For the feature Friday post this week, we welcome Jeanie of Inspired Wish, a fellow Aussie and Madeit seller.  Her store boasts a range of colourful and funky creations to catch your eye - are you ready to find out more?!

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hi, I'm Jeanie and I live in Geelong with my husband and our two turtles Aristotle and Gertrude. I relocated from Queensland almost three years ago.  Although it gets a bit cold here, I love the life style change. I'm a full time Receptionist.  I'm the only Admin person supporting 20 Engineers and Surveyors.  My day job keeps me busy and a little stressed.  My hobby is the stuff I do outside work that helps me unwind, and fulfils my creative and accessorising desires.

Describe yourself in five words.
Easy-going, positive, purposeful, perfectionist, chocoholic.

When and how did you first start crafting/creating?
I've always been crafty but didn't think of myself as a creative artist until recently.  My passion for jewellery making was sparked early 2010.  I'd been feeling dowdy and dull and wasn't sure how to turn that around.  I thought a new hair style might help so I set out on a mission by googling face shapes and hair styles.  I stumbled across a blog for an Image Consultant.  I found the answers I was looking for!  I met with Imogen Lamport who helped me discover my personality style and colours.

What do you create and what are your favourite materials with which to work?
I create modern jewellery with the aim of inspiring women to feel fabulous.  I love to work with resin and sterling silver.  I also adore colourful beads.  I'm planning to work more with gemstones soon.  Colour plays a large part in my pieces.  I love achieving an original look by colouring metal (copper/brass) with patina.  I have some ideas for a few sterling silver pieces.  I'm sure somehow they'll end up with a hint of colour, I can't help myself.

When and how did you start selling online?
When someone first suggested that I should sell my work online I thought that was outrageous.  After several prompts it didn't seem so ridiculous and I looked into it.  I decided to go with an Australian site to be amongst fellow Aussie creators and set up shop on Madeit.  I launched Inspired Wish on 3rd July 2010.
If someone had told me in just 10 months I'd be working with a graphic designer, developing a jewellery line, taking custom orders, and wishing this was my full time job, I'd have laughed out loud.  I've never been busier or happier.  There's a lot of work that goes in hand with creating and selling your jewellery online, but its also deeply satisfying.

Describe your store in five words.
Contemporary, fun, colourful, modern, fabulous.

Who or what are the influences behind your creations?
I'm influenced by a lot of things. I'm influenced by a need to create pieces that compliment my wardrobe.  I'm often inspired after visiting a gallery or garden nursery that has interesting sculptures.  A huge metal contraption or water feature can spark an idea for a pendant or earrings. A lot of my pieces are created because I had an urge to learn a new technique.

Feature Friday - Jewels by Trish

My featured artist for this week is the talented Trish of Jewels by Trish.  Trish and I are both members of the Christian Artists Street Team on Etsy and I just adore the way she uses beads in her creations!  Before I give too much away, let's find out a bit more about the creator behind this US-based label.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Tricia, but my friends call me Trish.  I am a 1st grade teacher and love handcrafting jewelry!  I have two kids...a 13 year old girl and a 5 year old boy.

Describe yourself in five words.
Loving, compassionate, shy, independent, fun.

When and how did you first start crafting/creating?
I have been crafting in some form since I was a little girl.  I found beads a few years ago through a good friend.  My husband bought me an expensive necklace and when I discovered I could make it myself for much, much less; I was hooked!   Creating with beads offers me stress relief too!  I just love it!!

What do you create and what are your favourite materials with which to work?
I create jewelry and so far love every material I touch!  I love pearls, gemstones, sterling silver, wire wrapping, suede, leather, chain, memory wire...

When and how did you start selling online?
I started selling online over a year ago.  I found Etsy through a jewelry forum on about.com.

Describe your store in 5 words.
Eclectic, elegant, funky, classic, affordable.

Who or what are the influences behind your creations?
My creations are influenced by the beads themselves for the most part.  I usually start with a focal piece and then rifle through my collections until something "pops" into place.  The beads just "speak to me."

Where can we find you online?

Special Offer: Trish is generously offering 15% OFF to all Two Cheeky Monkeys readers!  To take up this fantastic offer, simply use the coupon code "blog15" at checkout when you make your purchase.

Feature Friday - 2Kute

Yes, my feature Friday posts are back!!!  This is my first post for the year and I will be scheduling more feature Friday posts throughout 2011.  My first featured artisan for the year is Rose of 2kute, a fellow CAST member and the creator of some very cute crocheted items!  So let's find out a little about some of her creative journey so far...

Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Rose and Etsy is my job.  I no longer have a 'dayjob' due to health problems.  I found myself home, sick and bored. TV was my friend and companion (along with Bambam, my yorkie), my favorite channel was HGTV and I started to watch craft shows.  That is when I decided to go back to crochet.

Describe yourself in five words.
Funny, peace maker, stubborn, perfectionist, optimist.

When and how did you first start crafting/creating?
I started to crochet in my early teens but then life happened, school, marriage, children, career... hen back in 2003 I became ill and had to quit my job.  That is when I picked crochet back up again and really delved into it, learning more stitches and techniques

What do you create and what are your favourite materials with which to work?
I crochet pretty much everything and anything, however, my passion is hats.  I love making hats.  I love the natural fibers - cotton and wool are two of my favorite.

When and how did you start selling online?
I signed for Etsy in January 2008, but I was so afraid to list my items.  So it really took me about five to six months to build up the courage to take pictures of what I had made and list them.

Describe your store in five words.
Cool, colorful, warm, cozy, eclectic.

Who or what are the influences behind your creations?
Everything.  I can get inspired by the colors in a magazine, or a commercial on TV, nature, flowers.  I love flowers.

Feature Friday, Special Offer and Giveaway - Julie's Jewels

This week's featured artist is a special lady who is the "team boss" of the Etsy Down Under Street Team, the very first team I joined on Etsy when I was new to the world of online selling.  So let me welcome Julie-Ann, of Julie's Jewels, the creator of beautiful jewellery pieces.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I live in a little town called Nhill (pronounced nil), we are the midway point on the highway between Melbourne and Adelaide. I don’t have a 9 to 5 job, but with 4 children, even though one has moved out, we have busy lives. The three children who are still at home all have special needs so we are always dealing with something or the other. I do sell Avon and have for the last 20 years or so and am now a team leader…
I also teach recorder at a local primary school and that has me doing two classes a week and assembly on Monday mornings to play Advance Australia Fair, amongst other school commitments. We also have a small school band that plays at the opening chapel of each term, there I use my Clarinet. It’s a lot of fun.
I am on several committees in town including Church, School, Chaplaincy and Business. I am also an Admin on the DUST team, a wonderful team of Australian Etsy sellers.

Describe yourself in five words.
Generous, Happy, Musical, Creative, Patient, Friendly… it’s hard to find positive words about yourself, this took some thinking.

When and how did you first start crafting/creating?
I started beading quite a few years ago by going to a craft class that was making Christmas decorations out of simple plastic beads. I had never beaded before but found I could follow the instructions and make up the decorations with no trouble at all, so I started to play around with a little jewellery for myself and it just exploded from there. I am now a member of my town's local business group - Business Nhill - and have registered my Julie's Jewels as a business name.

What do you create and what are your favourite materials with which to work?
Artisan Beaded Jewellery and Accessories using almost anything with holes. A few personal favourites – Lampwork, Gemstones, Czech Glass, Swarovski Crystals, Pearls, Sterling Silver, Brass, Copper and many many more.

When and how did you start selling online?
I started to sell on Etsy because I became very disappointed with eBay, with their fees, with the way that the eBay company was dealing with their sellers and the way that eBay buyers only want a bargain for the lowest possible price. Etsy suits me much better as it is for handcrafted products, and  I have now included stores on MadeIt and ArtFire.

Describe your store in five words.
Romantic, Feminine, Elegant, Colourful, Quirky

Who or what are the influences behind your creations?
I have no idea, I do like to use images and themes to create from, but mostly work work just pops out of my head – that could be quiet scary I suppose.

Where can we find you online?

Special Offer: Julie-Ann is offering 10% OFF your purchase in any of her stores for those who mention "Deb’s Review 10% off" at checkout.  This discount is valid until Christmas 2010.

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED!
Giveaway:  Julie-Ann is also offering one lucky reader a $20 item of their choice from her store.  Simply leave a comment on this post to be in the running to own a gorgeous Julie's Jewels piece!  Giveaway is open worldwide and will run until midnight, December 2nd 2010 (AEDST).  The winner will be chosen via Random.org.

Feature Friday and Special Offer - Beadevolution

My featured artist for this week is the talented Helen of Beadevolution.  Helen is a fellow Australian and DUST member who creates bold and edgy pieces for those who love chunky jewellery.  So let's find out more about Helen and her wonderful creations.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am originally from South Africa but have been living in Melbourne for the past three years. I have a background in Human Resource Management as well as having trained as a chef but I am pretty busy being a mother to my three young children at the moment and so am keen to avoid the corporate world. As well as my business, Beadevolution, I import and sell furniture on ebay (interiors are another passion!)

Describe yourself in five words.
I asked my husband to come up with five words to describe me - I think he is pretty accurate:
passionate, focussed, creative, caring and MESSY - I won't argue with the last...

Blue Feathered Resin Bangle (inspired by the Melbourne Cup fashions)

When and how did you first start crafting/creating?
I have always been creating something - I see myself as a specialist in 'putting things together' - interiors, gardens, food and now Beadevolution is just an extension of that. I have long been a collector of beads and have been making jewelry for friends for a few years. My store Beadevolution is still a new baby and is still 'evolving'.

What do you create and what are your favourite materials with which to work?
I make mostly resin jewelry. Beaded resin creations and chunky bangles, rings etc. I have become so entranced with the resin making process that I can see myself creating all my own beads from scratch - although it is a very time consuming process. I love the uniqueness of each piece - especially the coloring process - no two pieces will ever be the same. It is also an incredibly tactile medium and the sanding of each piece of handmade resin is a joy in itself.

When and how did you start selling online?
I have only recently opened my Beadevolution store on Etsy and am building my own website now. I have been selling furniture on ebay for a couple of years but this is my first online selling of my own handmade products.

Describe your store in 5 words.
Five words to describe my store would be: bright, bold, funky, colourful and tactile.

Who or what are the influences behind your creations?
My influences come from all around me. I am lucky to live very close to the beach and am working on some beach pebble inspired resin pieces at the moment. Some of my colour combinations come from looking at what is growing in my garden or at the colours in a favorite item of clothing or fabric.

Where can we find you online?

Special Offer: Helen is offering all Two Cheeky Monkeys readers 10% OFF any purchase in her store during the month of November!  Simply let her know that you found out about her store from this blog and she will refund you the difference.

Feature Friday and Special Offer - Filmless Photos

My featured artist for the week is the very lovely Kirsty of Filmless Photos!  Kirsty is a very talented photographer whom I met through the Australian Etsy DUST team.  Want to see some of her work and find out how you can be the proud owner of one or more of her pieces?  Then keep reading!

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I currently live and work in Wagga Wagga, NSW, which is in between Sydney and Melbourne (inland) but am originally from North Queensland. I work full time as an Occupational Therapist but dream of making that work part time (becuase for the most part I do enjoy it) and growing Filmless Photos to be a viable business. I am also in the middle (kind of at the end bit) of renovating my house - it's been a 3 year job!

Describe yourself in 5 words.
 Quirky, eccentric, imaginative, caring, stubborn.

When and how did you first start crafting/creating?
I think I have always been creative. As a kid I enjoyed arts/crafts and drama, as a teenager I played music, drama and continued with the art/craft thing. I've always enjoyed photography (point and shoot stuff) but didn't get my first play with an SLR until I was around 18. I bought my first digital SLR (after playing with someone else's) about 3 years ago and then started getting serious about it all. I am completely self taught but I am at the stage now where I would love to have some proper studio training - it's an area of photography I would like to have a play with. At the moment - I've been doing it on my own with the help of the photographic online community (which is incredibly helpful and supportive)

What do you create and what are your favourite materials with which to work?
I create photographic art from what already exisits in the world. I hope that I create images which invoke memories and emotions. I hope it makes people smile.
I have also recently started a product photography venture, where I can provide small sellers with good product photos so they can sell online. I know some people hate taking photos, and I am a nerd and like it :) It was obvious that I could fill a gap there and enjoy doing it.
My favourite materials - my camera and my lenses (Canon 50mm 1.4 and my Tamron 90mm Macro lenses are my favourite).

When and how did you start selling online?
I started selling online in 2009. I was a shopper on Etsy before I was a seller and it purely came about as an experiment. I noticed other people selling their photography online and though "hey, I can do that" and then Filmless Photos was born. It's grown a little bit since then...

Describe your store in 5 words
The way I see it...  [Edit: Oooh, she's philosophical!   :) ]

Who or what are the influences behind your creations?
I don't know if I can pin point the influences behind my work. I think it's a combination of a lot of things, including the world around me. I definately know I wouldn't be doing this without the support and encouragement of my partner and family - they are the ones that tell me that I can do it and provide guidence and ideas - I really do appreciate and cherish that.

Feature Friday and Special Offer - Amaria's Paper Works

This week's featured artist is a fellow Melburnian and Melbourne Etsy Street Team member.  Her stores are full of fantastic creations for little girls (and boys), so without further ado, let me introduce you to Amaria of Amaria's Paper Works.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I live in Melbourne, Australia. I am a full-time Mum and a primary teacher on family leave.

Describe yourself in five words.
Five words to describe myself would be: creative, impulsive, disorganised, easygoing and welcoming.

When and how did you first start crafting and creating?
I have always loved painting, drawing and making things. As a child my birthday wish list always included a packet of plasticene, some new Derwents and "grey-leads" and a sketch book! For me, art is a way to unwind and take time to think while my hands are busy.
What do you create and what are your favourite materials with which to work?  And when and how did you start selling online?
Before becoming a mother, I found my creative outlet through painting - usually with acrylics. My paintings are mostly inspired by our beautiful Australian landscape.
Since having children, however, I haven't had the opportunity to work on this kind of thing for a while - apart from the lack of time, there is the question of where to set up my easel without little people "helping" me!

Then, almost a year ago, I was at a Church conference with lots of friends. My sister and I were sitting at a table one afternoon, chatting over a coffee, when she brought out some paper dolls I'd made for my niece years ago. She told how she had used them to tell a story to a Sunday School group and kept them spellbound.  Then she said, "You know, you should make these to sell!"
I wasn't convinced at first - but as we were talking, the table filled up with children who wanted to have a closer look at the dolls. Several Mums stopped to look and comment. Even one of the Dads sat down and played with his son for a while. They all agreed with my sister, and one of the other Mums told me about an online marketplace called Etsy…

So after some trial and error (the original dolls were made of laminated card and the clothes attached with blu-tac!) I started to make the magnetic wooden dress-up dolls you see in my shop today! I paint the original figures and clothes - or draw them on the computer. Then I print them and mount the dolls on 3mm craft wood, with a magnetic sheet sandwiched between the layers. I cut them out with a scroll saw, varnish them and add a magnetic strip on the back. The clothes are laminated so that they last a bit longer when small children use them and they attach to the dolls with magnets.
Most of my sales so far have been for personalised dolls. Apart from the opportunity to create new and unique pieces, my favourite aspect of these is getting to know the customer a bit; every order has a story behind it, as individual as the child the order is for!

Feature Friday and Special Offer - River Gum Jewellery

My featured artist for this week is the very lovely Robyn of River Gum Jewellery.  Robyn is a fellow DUST member and Melburnian who creates lovely, lovely jewellery.  I know first hand, because I  was blessed to receive a GORGEOUS necklace from Robyn in a craft swap (see this post) and I also own a pair of her cute gemstone ear studs!  And don't forget to look out for her special offer to Two Cheeky Monkeys readers at the end of this post.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello. My name is Robyn and I am very fortunate to live on a two and a half acre property in Sunbury, Victoria. I am wife of an incredibly supportive husband and mother of two gorgeous adult children. My daughter is living in London pursuing an acting career and my son will finish a Physiotherapy degree at the end of this year.
I work part-time in my husband’s business and teach piano part-time [Edit: Now you see why I like Robyn so much? He he]. The rest of the time is spent amongst beautiful gemstones and wire, designing and creating pieces for RiverGum Jewellery

Describe yourself in five words.
Determined, compassionate, enquiring, creative, nature-loving

When and how did you first start crafting and creating?
As a child I remember sitting in front of the TV on a Saturday night making clothes out of newspaper. I learnt to knit, crochet and sew very early. However, my childhood and adolescence were taken up with music. I played the piano, recorder, clarinet, sang, debated and acted in everything available to me. It wasn’t until I got married that I started to sew. I also discovered cross-stitch through my mother-in-law and then quilling when doing a calligraphy course. For a number of years I sold cards at the local craft market in Essendon. When my daughter first left home for uni in Perth, I took up patchwork. I felt I needed something new in my life to fill the void. During that time I started jewellery making and I have been hooked ever since. That was seven years ago

What do you create and what are your favourite materials with which to work?
I mainly create jewellery that can be worn on a daily basis. I enjoying testing my designs. I will often wear the same piece every day for a week to make sure it sits well and wears well. I work with gold-filled, sterling silver, fine silver and copper wire, and love using natural gemstones and freshwater pearls. I enjoy wire wrapping, fusing and soldering wire as well as pearl knotting, chain maille and Chinese knotting.

When and how did you start selling online?
I started my online Etsy shop in May this year and my Madeit shop a month later. Until then I had stalls at various markets around Melbourne, including Flemington, sharing the space with my friend Keryn. We had lots of fun together but in the end, managing the heavy marquee and tables, bad weather and very early mornings, as well as being away from the family at the weekend, became too much. That was when I decided to try online selling.

Describe your store in five words.
Eclectic, simple, earthy, vibrant, appealing.

Who or what are the influences behind your creations?
Sometimes it is the stones themselves that inspire me. I discover a stone in my collection, an idea comes, and before I know it I have every box and drawer open. I love it when something is created out of the chaos and I am frustrated when it doesn’t.
Clothing inspires me also. Someone will come with a new outfit and together we will create something that just finishes off the outfit or becomes the focus itself.
Other times it is when I first wake or I’m in the shower when an idea comes and I can’t wait to get into the studio to try it out.
